Returning to Rome after three years in the field, General Marcus Vinicius Robert Taylor meets Lygia Deborah Kerr and falls in love with her, though as a Christian, she wants nothing to do with a warrior.

Ancient Rome never looked so good--especially in the gorgeous MGM technicolor of Costumes, sets, photography and music are all of a high order--and all of the performances are competent with two outstanding ones by Leo Genn Petronius and Peter Ustinov Nero. Ustinov reminds me of an overbaked Charles Laughton in some of his mad scenes, but he is a convincing weakling as Nero.

Leo Genn has some of the wittiest dialogue and handles his lines with professional ease, his eyes flashing with humor as he pretends to agree with Nero on certain points. Robert Taylor is stalwart in the lead giving his usual dependable performance and Deborah Kerr is lovely if a bit British in manner as Lygia.

All the action and excitement you want from a spectacle--the burning of Rome, Christians in the arena thrown to the lions, the triumphal marches accompanied by Miklos Rozsa's mighty score--and scenes with sentimental and religious overtones sometimes too extended and talky --all combine to make the kind of lush spectacle MGM knew would be popular at the box-office.

He had been fired from previous jobs for alleged libel, cheating with the boss' wife, hot-headedness and drunkenness. Contemptuous of New Mexico and utterly frustrated after a year there, he missed New York after being stuck in New Mexico for a year: " Too much outdoors. Give me those eight spindly trees in front of Rockefeller Center any day.

That's enough outdoors for me To stir up excitement and readership and to jump-start his career, he exploitatively stage-managed an "ace in the hole" media-frenzied story - an orchestrated operation to rescue good-hearted Leo Minosa Richard Benedictthe adult son of a trading post owner, trapped by a cave-in of rocks feet inside an ancient, haunted Indian cliff dwelling Mountain of the Seven Vultures where he was looting it of artifacts in the remote town of Escudero three hour's drive from Albuquerque.

He perpetuated his sleazy, hustling scheme with Leo's long-suffering, jaded, and unhappy femme fatale wife Lorraine Jan Sterling who had a five-year unfulfilled marriage to Leo. The opportunistic young woman first considered running off, but was hustled by Tatum to remain when he suggested that there would be monetary rewards for staying and pretending to be a grieving wife.

She was easily persuaded by the promise of revenue from gathering throngs to remain with her ailing husband. Tatum also manipulated the local corrupt Sheriff Gus Kretzer Ray Teal up for re-election to help in his scheme.

He was able to delay rescue efforts that would have taken only about hours by simply shoring up the mine and pulling Leo outbut instead convinced the crew to drill from above a 6-day job.

Ultimately, last rites were administered by a priest to pneumonia-stricken Leo after 6 days of being unnecessarily trapped in the cave-in. Afterwards, Tatum delivered a memorable speech to the crowds to go home after Leo's death.

In the shocking conclusion, the bleeding, defeated journalist Tatum collapsed at the feet of his editor-in-chief Mr. Jacob Q. Boot Porter Hall.

Zanuck from a screenplay by Mankiewicz, based on the German play by Curt Goetzwhich had been made into a movie in Germany Doctor Praetorius People Will Talk describes an episode in the life of Dr. Noah Praetorius, a physician who teaches in a medical school and founded a clinic dedicated to treating patients humanely and holistically. The plot contains two parallel story lines: a professional-misconduct challenge brought against Praetorius by his more conventional colleague Dr.

Rodney Elwell, who dislikes Praetorius's unorthodox but effective methods; and the struggle of a distressed young woman named Deborah Higgins, who falls in love with Praetorius while dealing with an out-of-wedlock pregnancy. At the start of the film, Elwell has hired a detective to investigate Praetorius. A housemaid who once worked for Praetorius reacts visibly when Elwell asks her about Praetorius's mysterious friend Mr.

Shunderson, who rarely leaves Praetorius's side and has a deep, intuitive understanding of human and animal nature. Elwell's detective discovers that Shunderson was once convicted of murder, and Elwell calls for a misconduct hearing against Praetorius.

At the hearing, Praetorius explains that he started his career in a small town by opening a butcher shop as a front for his undeclared medical practice, because the people of the town didn't trust doctors. Elwell accuses Praetorius of " quackery ", but Praetorius defends himself with the fact that he was a licensed practitioner, describing how he was forced to leave town after his maid discovered his medical degree. Praetorius refuses to answer questions about Shunderson, but Shunderson explains that he served 15 years in prison for the alleged death of a man who had tried to murder him, then somehow survived being hanged after actually murdering the man, who had gone into hiding during the first trial.

When he woke up, he was lying on a table in front of Praetorius, who was at that time a medical student examining what he believed was a cadaver. Praetorius kept Shunderson's survival a secret, and Shunderson became Praetorius's devoted friend. After this story is told, the chairman concludes the hearing in Praetorius's favor, and Elwell walks away alone and discredited. Meanwhile, Deborah enters Praetorius's life, displaying signs of emotional distress.

After she faints during a lecture, Praetorius examines her and informs her that she's pregnant. Upset by this news, "Mrs. Higgins" admits that she's not really married.
